Adult Tinkham Sling

The Adult Tinkham Sling is a highly specialised transfer sling designed for users with extreme extensor patterning, involuntary spasms, or difficulty maintaining body control during a hoist transfer — sometimes referred to clinically as users with 'extreme extensions.' Originally developed for the paediatric range and later adapted for adults, the Tinkham design wraps firmly around the body rather than hanging loosely, so the user effectively 'wears' the sling instead of sitting in it. It features a fully supportive, divided-leg design combined with a wrap-around thoracic section that is secured with a clunk-click buckle fastening, keeping the torso and legs firmly contained even if the user pushes, arches, or extends against the sling during the lift. A soft, padded neck roll and head support cushion and stabilise the head and neck, which is important for users who cannot reliably control head position. Standard hip tapes are included, with provision to fit a second set for additional security, and two modesty straps are supplied — one running alongside the inner leg tape and one across the width of the leg — to preserve dignity during transfers. Because of its containment features, the Tinkham Sling is intended for users assessed by a clinician or occupational therapist as needing this level of postural control, and should only be fitted and used by trained caregivers following a documented moving-and-handling plan.
