The Bradbury Turner is a specialised patient handling sling designed specifically for turning a person onto their side in bed, rather than for a full hoist lift out of bed. Its purpose is to eliminate the need for a caregiver to lean over the bed and manually support a patient's body weight while repositioning them, which is one of the most common causes of caregiver back and musculoskeletal injury in nursing and home care. It also reduces the tugging and shear friction against the skin that occurs with manual turning, which is particularly important for patients with fragile skin or pressure-injury risk. The Bradbury Turner is fitted with webbing loops at all four corners, allowing it to be attached to a standard spreader-bar hoist yoke from either side of the bed — meaning a patient can be turned onto either side without needing to remove, reposition, or re-insert the sling underneath them each time. This bidirectional design saves time and reduces handling for staff, while giving the patient a more comfortable and controlled turning motion than manual repositioning. It is best suited to patients who need regular side-turning for pressure care, hygiene, or wound management, and who already have a hoist and yoke available at the bedside. As with all hoist slings, it should only be fitted and operated by trained caregiving staff following an individual moving-and-handling plan.
